NSW Launches Australia’s First Mandatory Battery Stewardship Scheme

Livium Ltd (ASX: LIT) has welcomed the commencement of the NSW mandatory battery product stewardship scheme, marking a significant regulatory milestone in Australia. The scheme, which came into effect on 1 October 2026, is designed to increase the collection and recycling of regulated batteries through producer responsibility.

Material actions and disclosures

The Product Lifecycle Responsibility Regulation 2026 (NSW) sets out key requirements for battery brand owners, including funding collection and recycling, adhering to collection and safety standards, and meeting recycling standards. Brand owners must also keep records of regulated batteries supplied and comply with annual reporting obligations.

Livium’s wholly owned subsidiary, Envirostream, is well positioned to support the industry as these volumes grow. Envirostream’s capabilities include national collection and logistics for both small- and large-format lithium-ion batteries, site capacity at the Derrimut Hub, and experience processing mixed lithium-ion battery chemistries.

Forward commitments

Livium aims to support the transition towards a nationally consistent mandatory battery stewardship model. The company will continue to engage with product stewardship organisations, the NSW EPA, and other state and territory regulators as mandatory stewardship is considered across Australia.
