BHP has reported an 8% increase in operational GHG emissions for the fiscal year ending June 2026 (FY2026) compared to the previous fiscal year, driven by activity-driven changes and changes to emissions calculation methodologies. The company’s operational GHG emissions for FY2026 were 9.4 MtCO2-e, an increase from 8.7 MtCO2-e in FY2025.
Material actions and disclosures
BHP’s value chain emissions for FY2026 were 429 MtCO2-e, a 1% increase from FY2025. The company’s long-term net zero goal was set in FY2017, and its operational GHG emissions medium-term target and value chain GHG emissions shipping medium-term goal were developed in FY2020. BHP’s value chain GHG emissions long-term net zero goal was developed in FY2021.
Changes to improve the accuracy of Scope 3 Category 1 emission inventory reporting, in combination with organic change in spend, drove a reduction of Scope 3 Category 1 emissions for FY2026 by 11%. BHP’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are calculated using the Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme, while its Scope 3 emissions are reported based on the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard.
Forward commitments
BHP aims to achieve a long-term net zero goal and has set medium-term targets for operational GHG emissions and value chain GHG emissions shipping. The company will continue to align its Scope 3 emissions reporting to operational control as required under AASB S2 and will use the calculation methodologies specified in the Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Determination 2008, the Chilean Green Tax legislation, and the Canadian Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP), as applicable.
BHP has early adopted the amendments to AASB S2 issued by the Australian Accounting Standards Board in December 2025.
