Lithium Universe Limited (ASX: LU7) is advancing plans for a lithium carbonate refinery in the Port of Brownsville, Texas, complementing its flagship project in Bécancour, Québec. The company aims to address North America’s lithium conversion shortage and strengthen the battery supply chain, positioning itself as a key player in the emerging North American lithium market.
Material actions and disclosures
The proposed refinery will produce up to 18,270 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate, focusing initially on the production of lithium carbonate for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The project is designed to be commercially executable, with the environmental approval process anticipated to remain manageable and capable of being completed within an estimated 15–24 month timeframe.
The company has secured approximately 60% of the refinery’s spodumene requirements through a long-term supply arrangement and intends to secure the remaining balance from additional producers. This strategy is designed to provide a stable and reliable feedstock supply, supporting continuous refinery operations and reducing exposure to market and supply chain disruptions.
Lithium Universe has also engaged with Texas economic development agencies and industry stakeholders regarding the proposed Brownsville Lithium Refinery Project and its role in strengthening domestic critical minerals processing capacity. The project is well aligned with U.S. policy objectives aimed at expanding domestic critical minerals processing, strengthening battery supply chains, and reducing reliance on imported battery materials.
Forward commitments
Lithium Universe aims to leverage a “copy and paste” design from the proven Bécancour refinery, ensuring efficient operations and timely implementation. The company plans to develop robust logistics and supply chain management strategies to address potential disruptions and optimize its cost structure to counteract pricing pressures.
The company remains committed to supporting local community, workforce development, educational, and environmental initiatives as the project progresses. Lithium Universe will also maintain a strong legal team to address and manage potential litigation risks.
Lithium Universe Limited’s strategy is counter-cyclical, designed to build through the market downturn and benefit from the inevitable recovery, ensuring sustained exposure to the growing lithium demand.
