Austral Outlines Environmental Rehabilitation and Heritage Commitments

Austral has outlined its environmental rehabilitation plans and heritage commitments for the Rocklands Project, including financial provisions for future rehabilitation and remediation costs. The company understands that cash-backed rehabilitation bonds are reviewed annually and are believed to be sufficient to complete all rehabilitation requirements. However, MinVal, an independent expert, suggests an additional rehabilitation allowance should be included in any financial analysis prior to re-commencing mining and processing activities.

Material actions and disclosures

Austral has made provisions in its financial statements for future rehabilitation and closure costs, totalling $68.77 million as of 30 June 2026. These provisions reflect the present value of rehabilitation costs expected to be incurred over the life of the mine or when mine properties cease operations. The company acknowledges the uncertainty in estimating the quantum of such costs and the potential for actual costs to be substantially greater than current provisions.

Native title agreements with the Kalkadoon, Mitakoodi, and Mayi peoples include financial and community benefit commitments. These agreements are part of Austral’s broader environmental and heritage management strategy, which aims to comply with all relevant laws and regulations.

Forward commitments

Austral aims to conduct its activities to the highest standard of environmental obligation and intends to carry appropriate insurance coverage where possible. The company also plans to continue its efforts to secure external processing partnerships to increase feed to the plant and optimise plant efficiency.

These commitments reflect Austral’s ongoing focus on environmental compliance and rehabilitation, as well as its efforts to manage risks associated with its operations.
