West African Resources Limited has reported significant progress in its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, including the planting of over 80,000 trees and the diversion of 92% of non-mineral waste from disposal.
Material actions and disclosures
West African Resources has announced the planting of more than 80,000 trees through community and site revegetation programs, and the collection of 381kg of seeds from locally valued or medicinal plant species for revegetation. Additionally, the company has diverted 92% of non-mineral waste from disposal and generated over A$500,000 for community initiatives through local recycling partnerships.
West African Resources has also published its Environmental Management Policy in November 2025 and its AASB S2 climate-related disclosures in the 2025 Annual Report. The company has implemented a comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) based on ISO 45001 standards, with a WAF TRIFR of 1.35 compared to the Western Australian Gold Industry IFR of 5.7.
Since the start of mining operations in 2020, West African Resources has contributed over US$771 million to Burkina Faso in taxes and royalties, invested US$16 million in community projects and donations, and contributed US$42 million to a mining development fund, representing 1% of revenue.
The company has also made significant contributions to education and training, building four schools and refurbishing two schools with solar power and learning resources. Additionally, the WAF Scholarship Program has awarded eight scholarships since 2022, with the first cohort of SOMISA scholarship recipients graduating and one recipient now employed full-time at Sanbrado.
West African Resources has expanded the SOMISA – Toega Program to four scholarships per year and launched the Kiaka Program, with four scholarships to be awarded.
These initiatives reflect West African Resources’ commitment to environmental stewardship, workforce safety, and community development.
