Super Retail Group Aims for Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 Emissions by 2030

Super Retail Group is focusing on reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by transitioning to renewable energy sources and implementing energy efficiency measures, with a target to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

Material actions and disclosures

The company will source 100% renewable electricity in Australia, where available, starting from FY27. It has established guidelines for energy efficiency requirements for new store fit-outs, including HVAC and lighting systems. The company is implementing several initiatives to reduce Scope 1 emissions, such as updating tenancy fit-out specifications to phase out natural gas and LPG. It is also developing a Scope 3 program of work aligned to its 2030 Sustainability Framework.

The company is disclosing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for the same consolidated reporting entity and reporting period as its Consolidated Financial Statements. It uses the location-based method to calculate Scope 2 emissions and the market-based method on a voluntary basis. The company is using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard to prepare its greenhouse gas emissions inventory and the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) GWP values for its Australian emissions and the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) GWP values for its non-Australian emissions.

Forward commitments

The company plans to use carbon credits to offset emissions that cannot be eliminated. It aims to develop a carbon credit policy to guide the use of offsets and integrate the potential role of carbon credits, along with associated costs, into its existing financial planning processes. The company is committed to improving the quality and completeness of Scope 3 emissions data for reporting purposes and identifying opportunities to transition from a spend-based methodology to the use of primary supplier data.

The company is reviewing its net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions target as part of the 2030 Sustainability Framework refresh and expects to continue to develop in-house capabilities to meet increased reporting requirements.
