Silex Systems Advances SILEX Uranium Enrichment Technology to TRL-6

Silex Systems has successfully advanced its SILEX uranium enrichment technology to Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6), marking a significant step towards commercialisation in the US. The company’s joint venture with Cameco, Global Laser Enrichment (GLE), has completed the large-scale pilot plant demonstration of the SILEX technology at GLE’s Test Loop facility in Wilmington, North Carolina, with full independent validation. This milestone represents a key technology de-risking event, setting the stage for the maturation of the SILEX technology and its commercial deployment at the planned Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility (PLEF) in Kentucky by 2030.

Material actions and disclosures

The successful achievement of TRL-6 is a pivotal milestone for Silex and GLE, reflecting the tenacious focus of the teams on execution and the strength of their leadership. The completion of the large-scale enrichment demonstration, including independent validation, is a critical step towards the commercialisation of the SILEX technology. This achievement sets the foundation for further detailed design and demonstration of the technology at full-scale commercial system conditions (TRL-7).

Forward commitments

Silex and GLE continue to advance their commercialisation plans, with GLE’s application for a licence to construct and operate the PLEF currently under review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The companies aim to finalise the licence for the PLEF as early as CY2027, subject to market conditions, industry support, and other factors. The planned PLEF represents a unique single-site solution for US domestic production of uranium, conversion, and enrichment services, placing GLE in a strong position to serve the growing Western demand for nuclear fuel.
