Sigma Lithium, the largest producer of lithium oxide concentrate in the Americas, was selected by Nasdaq to ring the closing bell during New York Climate Week. This recognition underscores the company’s pioneering approach to sustainable lithium production and socioeconomic development in Brazil’s Lithium Valley.
Material actions and disclosures
Sigma Lithium has implemented several social programs aimed at fostering economic and social inclusion in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region. These initiatives have created over 19,000 job positions, benefiting approximately 80,000 family members in one of the most economically underserved areas of the State of Minas Gerais. The company has also constructed over 1,400 small-scale rainwater reservoirs, providing water security and resilience for rural families and mitigating the cause of mass migrations.
Environmentally, Sigma Lithium has achieved a ‘Quintuple Zero’ status, which includes zero tailing dams, zero use of potable water, zero fatalities since inception, zero use of highly toxic chemicals, and 100% use of renewable electricity. The company operates with some of the lowest levels of vibration, noise, and dust in the industry, adhering to strict legal limits.
Forward commitments
Sigma Lithium aims to continue its commitment to sustainability by expanding its operations. The company has initiated a Phase 2 expansion designed to nearly double its annual production capacity to 580,000 tonnes and plans a Phase 3 expansion to further increase capacity to 830,000 tonnes.
The company remains confident in its legal standing and will continue to operate normally while defending its rights and pursuing all remedies available under Brazilian law in response to a recent legal challenge regarding environmental licenses.
Attributed to Sigma Lithium’s CEO, Ana Cabral, the company’s recognition by Nasdaq is a testament to its unique journey and resilience in navigating volatile lithium price cycles without diluting shareholders.
