Queensland Brine Solutions (QBS) is developing the first dedicated CSG brine treatment and resource recovery facility in Australia, the Brine Management Complex (QBMC). The facility aims to convert CSG brine into recovered water, industrial chemicals, and managed residual streams, aligning with Queensland’s regulatory framework that prioritizes beneficial use over storage and disposal.
Material actions and disclosures
The QBMC will be located within the Crossroads Renewable Energy precinct, supporting integration with renewable energy infrastructure. The project is to be developed progressively, starting with a commercial demonstration project (CDP) to confirm process performance and commercial viability.
The facility is expected to process volumes equivalent to Queensland’s annual CSG brine generation, including legacy brines. The project is expected to produce caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, and other outputs, supporting sustainable industry practices and protecting sensitive environments.
The QBMC will be subject to environmental authority (EA) conditions and general environmental duty, reducing reliance on long-term storage and disposal, and altering the scale and nature of future rehabilitation and residual-risk liabilities.
Forward commitments
Stages 1-4 will progressively develop larger-scale treatment capacity, with the facility expected to strengthen domestic supply chains by producing important chemical reagents, including caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, for the critical minerals sector and the aluminum industry.
QBS aims to provide a pathway more closely aligned with contemporary regulatory expectations and support the transition of brine from a residual waste liability to a managed resource stream.
