Northern Star has set a target to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030, focusing on renewable energy projects and decarbonisation strategies. The company aims to achieve this through the implementation of solar and wind projects at multiple sites, as well as the development of in-house capabilities to model energy demand and efficiency.
Material Actions and Disclosures
Northern Star has developed and implemented several measures to address its emissions reduction target. These include the development of a climate transition plan for KCGM Operations, which includes the construction of a new multi-fuel thermal power station and renewable energy generation facilities. The company has also signed a 25-year electricity supply agreement with Zenith Energy for KCGM Operations, which will provide 256MW of wind generation, 138MW of solar photovoltaic capacity, and 138MW/300MWh of battery energy storage.
Additionally, Northern Star has spent $16 million on solar and wind power arrangements across the Group in FY26, and has estimated GHG emissions using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and Full Carbon Accounting Model. The company has also monitored the withdrawal, consumption, and discharge of water at all sites, with recycling and reuse strategies in place.
Forward Commitments
Northern Star plans to review the impact of the acquisition of Pilbara Operations on its emissions target and continue to assess the assets and activities vulnerable to climate-related risks. The company also aims to develop decarbonisation strategies that support its Net Zero ambition and implement the Eastern Goldfields Power Project Joint Venture for KCGM Operations.
Further, Northern Star expects to complete the engineering, procurement, and construction of the thermal power station and commission the renewable energy generation facilities. The company also aims to achieve a 25% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 and continue to reduce emissions through the implementation of renewable energy projects.
