Fortescue Metals Group has invested $680 million in renewable power capacity in the Pilbara, expanding its Green Grid and supporting its decarbonisation efforts. The company has installed more than 300,000 solar panels at the 190MW Cloudbreak solar farm and commissioned 250MWh of battery energy storage at North Star Junction and 120MWh at Eliwana. Additionally, Fortescue has completed 550km of transmission lines and commenced construction on the remaining 110km.
Fortescue’s decarbonisation efforts also include the deployment of electric drills and excavators, and the continued testing of battery-electric locomotives and truck technology. The company has also completed a supply chain opportunity assessment to identify priority categories for circularity initiatives and started two pilot projects with key suppliers, including recycling used HDPE pipe into feedstock for new pipe.
Fortescue’s progress in decarbonisation includes the production of 236GWh of power at North Star Junction, avoiding 0.116 MtCO₂-e emissions. The company has also completed the first worker welfare assessment at Tier 2 of the supply chain and the first worker voice survey pilot in collaboration with a supplier in the Pilbara.

The company has also deployed electric mining equipment and started circularity initiatives with suppliers.

Fortescue aims to continue progressing the technologies, infrastructure, and operational changes needed to achieve its Real Zero Target by 2030. The company also plans to work with suppliers, customers, and industry partners to support the decarbonisation of the value chain and to integrate physical climate risk into strategic planning, risk management, and investment decision-making.
