CSL has announced a near-term absolute GHG emissions reduction target of 42% by FY2030, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is implementing five key abatement levers, including new site design, electrification, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and fuel switch, to achieve this target.
Material actions and disclosures
CSL has achieved a 28% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from a FY2021 base year at three priority manufacturing sites. The company also aims to achieve 0% absolute growth in water use by FY2030 at these same sites.
CSL has increased the use of renewable electricity through onsite generation and market-based mechanisms, and is developing best-in-class facility greenfield sites and new buildings, embedding sustainable design principles upfront. The company is also replacing plant and equipment at its end-of-life with electric alternatives powered by renewables, and modifying its manufacturing processes and sites for increased energy efficiency.
Forward commitments
CSL will continue to monitor its progress against GHG emissions targets biannually and will validate its near-term targets with SBTi. The company will also continue to engage with suppliers that contribute to its Scope 3 emissions and will review initiatives and opportunities as part of its long-term capital investment planning.
CSL will continue to report progress against its biodiversity commitments while reviewing its future approach, and will source and use 100% of paper-based packaging materials from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified sources.
