BlueScope has reported stable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and outlined ambitious targets for reducing emissions intensity by 2030. The company’s latest report shows that Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity for steelmaking activities has decreased from 17.0 GJ/t in FY2018 to 15.2 GJ/t in FY2023, while non-steelmaking emissions intensity has dropped 13% from FY2018 levels to 1.44 tCO2-e/t in FY2026.
Material actions and disclosures
BlueScope reported that total GHG emissions (Scope 1 and 2) were 10,200 ktCO2-e in FY2026, with Scope 3 emissions at 11,950 ktCO2-e. The company also noted that net energy consumption was within historical ranges at 110 PJ in FY2023.
Forward commitments
BlueScope aims to achieve a 12% reduction in steelmaking emissions intensity by 2030 and a 30% reduction in non-steelmaking emissions intensity by 2030, compared to FY2018 baselines. The company also plans to continue improving the accuracy of its Scope 3 GHG emissions inventory and to investigate low emissions iron and steelmaking options, particularly Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technology pathways.
