AliGroup Announces Decarbonisation Initiatives and Regulatory Approvals

AliGroup has announced significant decarbonisation initiatives and secured necessary regulatory approvals for its operations in Australia and South Africa, aiming to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. The company’s Worsley Alumina operation in Western Australia has received state and federal environmental approvals for its mine life extension, ensuring bauxite production through at least FY36. Additionally, Worsley is committed to reducing its net operational emissions by halving them by FY35 from FY21 levels, in line with its parent’s broader decarbonisation targets.

Material actions and disclosures

AliGroup’s Worsley Alumina operation has received state and federal environmental approvals for its mine life extension, ensuring bauxite production through at least FY36. The company has also secured all necessary regulatory approvals to continue activities beyond currently approved mining areas, with the expectation that these will be obtained within appropriate timeframes to support the forecast production profile.

In South Africa, Hillside Aluminum is working with Eskom to develop a long-term energy solution incorporating competitively priced renewable energy, targeted to commence in 2031. Hillside is also subject to South Africa’s carbon tax under the Carbon Tax Act 2019.

AliGroup’s decarbonisation initiatives include investing in capital expenditure to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions intensity at its operations. The company’s Worsley Alumina LoOP includes assumptions related to future decarbonisation of the alumina refinery, with cost assumptions associated with future decarbonisation initiatives, including boiler conversion projects, incorporated into the Worsley Alumina LoOP.

Forward commitments

AliGroup aims to halve its net operational emissions by FY35 from FY21 levels. The company is also committed to securing low-carbon electricity supply beyond the current supply contract, which runs to 2031.

AliGroup’s Hillside Aluminium LoOP is currently limited to 2031, in line with the expiry of the existing electricity supply agreement.

These initiatives are part of the company’s broader strategy to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions intensity at its operations, in line with its parent’s decarbonisation targets.
