Bega Cheese Announces Ambitious Emissions Reduction Targets and Renewable Energy PPAs

Bega Cheese has entered into two 15-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy suppliers, marking a significant step in the company’s decarbonisation efforts. The PPAs, which are expected to be operational by FY2027, will contribute to a reduction in Scope 2 emissions and align with the company’s emissions reduction targets.

Material actions and disclosures

The company has committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 40% by 2030 from an FY2021 baseline. Scope 1 emissions refer to direct emissions produced from activities controlled by the Group, such as on-site combustion. Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from the generation of electricity purchased by the Group, measured using the location-based method.

As of FY2026, Scope 1 emissions were 89,776 tCO2-e and Scope 2 emissions were 154,737 tCO2-e, resulting in a total absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions of 244,513 tCO2-e.

The Energy Management Capability (EMC) program, now in its seventh year, focuses on identifying, prioritising, and implementing energy efficiency initiatives across the Group’s manufacturing sites. Submetering installations, energy mapping, and ongoing monitoring activities are used to identify and implement site-specific efficiency projects.

Forward commitments

Bega Cheese aims to develop a clearly defined path aligned to the Science Based Targets Initiative to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. The company also plans to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity by 50% per litre/tonne produced by 2030 from an FY2021 baseline.

The Better Future Strategy, approved by the Board in FY2025, includes a target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 against the FY2021 baseline. The Group is registered under Division 3 of Part 2 of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER).

These commitments reflect the Group’s ongoing efforts to address climate-related risks and opportunities, as detailed in the Better Future Sustainability Strategy.
